8 TIPS FOR A BETTER LOOKING BEARD

Let's face it, most of us are a bit lazy when it comes to personal grooming. In fact, being the lazy is often a major reason why men choose to grow out their beard.  While eliminating your daily shave may seem like a great way to save some time in the morning.  Unfortunately, that's often not the case. Properly caring for your beard takes time. However, once you get your grooming routine worked out, caring for your beard isn’t as complicated as many guys today would have you believe.   To make your beard care as easy as possible, we’ve compiled a list of 8 beard grooming tips for a better looking beard:

Patience is a Virtue

A truly great looking beard takes time. Different hairs grow at different rates.  It’s going to take some time for your beard to fill in. Although it may be tempting, resist the urge to trim for the first few weeks.  This will give your beard the time it needs to grow out and fill in. Once it's filled in, you’ll be able to see what you have to work with when choosing a style that best suits your beard type.

Choose a style that works for you.

So many articles encourage you to choose a beard style bases on the shape of your face.  In reality, your beard type(thick, thin, patchy, etc.) is going to determine what beard style will work for you.  Of course, some styles work better than others depending on the shape of your face, but in the end, just choose a style you like and roll with it.

Don’t be afraid to trim

Even if you're planning on growing your beard out, proper trimming is essential to maintaining a well-groomed, healthy beard.  Invest in a quality trimmer or decent scissors, and feel free take a little off the edges from time to time. Here’s a good article on the benefits a proper trim can provide for your beard.

Wash It Regularly

Beards tend to trap food particles and skin cells, both of which can exacerbate beard itch, irritation, and odor. To minimize these issues, be sure wash your beard several times per week with a beard specific wash from Bohemian Brothers. Gently dry with a towel, and keep blow drying to a minimum as hot air dryers tend to dry the beard out, resulting in split ends. .

Beard Oil is your Best Friend

I can’t stress this enough: Nothing tames a beard like regular use of beard oil. There are a ton of oils to choose from, in a wide range of masculine scents(and sadly, some not so masculine scents), but all of them will condition the hair, making them softer and shinier.  If you’re looking for a something traditional and classy, Bohemian Reserve is classic barber shop blend you might want to consider.  Or, if you’re more of rugged, outdoorsy type, Fallen Timber is a tried and true favorite.

Start Training Early On

Regular trimming will help maintain your beard shape, but it won’t keep your beard in line throughout the day.  Start the day by brushing or combing, training them to grown in a downward direction. Finish up by applying some beard balm to keep the fly-aways under control and give you some hold throughout the day.  Revival Beard Balm provides a light, flexible hold with a great spiced orange scent.

Remember the Mustache Wax

Unless you’ve chosen a whaler or chinstrap(hopefully you didn’t choose either),  growing an killer beard usually means you’ll need to groom your mustache as well. As mustaches grow longer, the hair tends to curl down into the mouth...which can be extremely annoying.  Apply mustache wax regularly to help keeps things neat and orderly. Incognito Mustache Wax is great medium hold wax to try. It’s all natural and unscented so it can be used in combination with any beard oils or colognes.

Food for thought

Proper nutrition is just as important as any grooming product for your beard. Hair is made from protein and fat, but it’s also heavily reliant on various vitamins, minerals and nutrients. Beard specific supplements are growing in popularity, but can sometimes cost and arm and leg.  I my opinion, they’re really not necessary. All of the nutrients you need to support exceptional beard growth can be found in lean meats, nuts, dairy products, and leafy greens.
