In this installment of the Bohemian Brothers Ledger, let's talk about a few things you could be getting 100% wrong when it comes to your daily beard care routine. So, without further adieu, here are the Three Most Common Beard Care Mistakes bearded gents often make.
#1) CHOOSING OFF THE SHELF SHAMPOOS AND CONDITIONERS:
I know I've mentioned this before, but I'm going to discuss it again. This is an extremely common error many of my bearded brothers continue to make in spite of the abundance of Beard Specific Washes available.
Off the shelf shampoos and conditioners are formulated to strip away dirt and grime from the hair on our head, not your beard. They often have much higher levels of chemicals and compounds designed to keep the hair and scalp clean. The conditioners are loaded with compounds(like silicone) to seal up the hair cuticle and make the hair feel softer. Notice I said “feel softer”...Silicone does nothing to actually make the hair or skin healthier. It simply gives you the look and feel of healthier hair.
The short term results of using these products are typically quite impressive; clean, soft beard hairs. However, it’s usually only a matter time before your beard begins to show signs of neglect. These signs include excessive split ends, beard itch, beardruff, and a dry, brittle beard that’s prone to breakage. Do yourself a favor, ditch the cheap, grocery store shampoos and switch to a wash specifically formulated for beards. They make a huge difference in the look and overall health of your beard.
#2) NOT USING BEARD OIL AND BALM:
“My beard has been growing just fine without these magic beard tonics, why should I start using them now?”.....My response to that question is: You’ve been lucky. Chances are, your luck is going to run out.
While it may be possible(but not recommended) to skip out on these products if your beard is on the shorter side, sporting a longer beard requires some work. Skipping the oil and balm when you have a longer beard is all but guaranteed to result in numerous problems: beard itch, flakes(beardruff), split ends, dry or brittle beard, slow growth, scraggly beard, etc...The fix is simple, use Beard Oil every day. If your beard is 2” or longer, throw some Beard Balm into the mix. Setting aside a few minutes each morning for a proper grooming routine will make an immediate difference in the look and feel of your beard. The long term results are well worth the extra time and effort.
3) NOT COMBING YOUR FACIAL HAIR IS A HUGE MISTAKE:
I frequently field questions from gentlemen asking how to properly care for their beard. Surprisingly, when combing or brushing is mentioned, there’s often a brief moment of silence, follow by “I hardly ever comb it.”
Listen, running a comb or brush through your beard after your shower literally takes 30 seconds of your time. Taking less than a minutes of your time to comb or brush will help remove tangles and evenly distribute beard care products( Beard Oil and Balm) throughout your beard. It also helps train the hairs to grow in a certain direction, making it much easier to style and groom in the future. As with daily use of Beard Oil and Balm, combing or brushing your beard on a daily basis will net you huge returns in the future.
